Case Study – Executive Search and Enduring Partnerships

A Partnership Built to Last

How one national nonprofit built a long-term recruitment relationship grounded in trust, co-creation, and radical honesty — and why they stopped looking anywhere else.

The Client

National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) – A national education nonprofit organization with a people and culture team committed to equity, people-centered culture, and intentional leadership development.

The Challenge

Finding a recruitment partner who could do more than fill roles — one who would understand the organization’s values, culture, and equity priorities deeply enough to represent them authentically to candidates; communicate and organize a clear, effective and efficient search process; deliver exceptionally qualified and diverse candidate portfolios for a variety of roles, from leadership to manager level.

What We Did ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

People First. Always

From the very first engagement, our approach was simple: listen more than we speak, lead where we have expertise, and invite collaboration and feedback. We started by getting to know the organization not through a briefing document, but through real conversation, across a spectrum of org constituents — to understand culture, priorities, challenges, leadership style and even organizational biases.

That investment meant something concrete: when talking to candidates, we didn’t pitch a job description. We could speak to the organization’s culture, its leadership style, and what it’s actually like to work there. We could also speak authentically about its pain points, a critical part of building trust and working toward mutual alignment with candidates. That credibility — built on genuine familiarity, not talking points — made candidates trust the process before they’d even met the client.

“I have so much inside language to share with candidates now — not because Guersch handed me a piece of paper, but because I spent real time with her and her team. Candidates feel that. It builds credibility for the organization before they’ve even walked through the door.”

How We Work ___________________________________________________________________________________________________

Co-Creation Without Compromise

True partnership means knowing when to invite the client in and when to hold the line. We gave the client ownership over meaningful choices — how to handle reference calls, how to structure committee conversations — while being clear and direct when something needed to go a different way.

As Guersch put it: “At really critical moments, she’ll say ‘We’re not doing it that way — here’s how it will impact the candidates, the equity of the process.’ She names it. She’s not afraid of it. And that’s exactly what makes the co-creation real.”

This balance — client agency plus consultant expertise — created a process that felt inclusive without being directionless. Everyone knew where there was room to play and where there wasn’t.

The Relationship ______________________________________________________________________________________________

Intentional Trust-Building

Trust doesn’t always require extensive time, but it does require intentionality. From the first engagement, we gave the client a clear roadmap of what to expect — then narrated every step as we moved through it. When our process was reliable and transparent, and the client knew what to expect, trust followed.

That trust enabled something harder and more valuable: honest conversations. When something wasn’t working, we named it. When course correction was needed, we handled it quickly and without defensiveness. When our search partner noticed something worth reflecting on — even for the client themselves — she said so, directly and with care.

“Nadia doesn’t call me out — she calls me in. Because there’s trust here, I can hear it. And because she’s built the reputation of being someone who is open and honest and is actually making us better, there’s no defensiveness. She’s earned the right to give me that feedback.”

Results

What This Partnership Produced

3 successful hires completed over 18 months, each strengthening rather than straining the relationship.
Institutional knowledge that means every new search starts ahead — no ramp-up, no re-explaining culture, no lost context.
A safe space for honest conversations about equity, leadership, and process — rare in a vendor relationship, invaluable in practice.
An exclusive partnership — the client no longer shops for recruitment support. When there’s a hire to make, they call Axis.

“You can’t just replicate this. It’s intentional. Something would have to go seriously sideways for me to look elsewhere — and even then, I feel like we’d wrestle it to the ground and figure it out together.”

— Guersch, Executive Client
